US Soccer vs United Soccer Coaches
SRI encourages coaches to participate in any coaching education programs offered. The two most well known license pathways are through United Soccer Coaches and US Soccer. SRI recommends the US Soccer pathways.
In 2018, US Soccer adjusted their coaching pathway to better suit the needs for coaches and their players. Interested coaches may begin with any in-person grassroots course of their choosing following the completion of the free - Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module, which is offered in U.S. Soccer's Digital Coaching Center. For information regarding schedule, pricing and availability of an in-person Grassroots course, prospective coaches should contact their local club organization directly or Soccer Rhode Island.
For coaches planning on taking the US Soccer 'D' License and above, new regulations require the US Soccer Grassroots training for 4v4, 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11. To qualify for the 'D' License course, at least two grassroots in-person courses are required; one of which MUST be the 11v11 plus an additional online license course. To qualify for a 'C' license, a minimum of 1 year experience with a 'D' license is required.
The 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, or 11v11 courses with United Soccer Coaches are not accepted as prerequisites for the US Soccer 'D' License.
