First Weekend of the New England Jamboree
April 21st & 22nd, 2012
The Coventry U14 girls team played the first round of the New England soccer jamboree in Pembroke New Hampshire this past weekend. The team played New Bedford athletic club for their first match. It was a very close first half with Coventry winning 1 to 0. The start of the second half the Coventry girls turned up the speed of play and scored two quick goals, New Bedford came back and scored one goal and then another off a penalty kick with about 15 minutes left in the match. The Coventry girls stepped up as a team, defended the ball well and the offense was able to put the game away with two more goals and winning 5 to 2.
The second match of the day was played against Phoenix, a club team from Portland Maine. This match was very tight for the first 20 minutes of the first half when Phoenix had a break away and scored the first goal of the match. The Coventry girls came together and tied it up just before half time at 1 to 1. The second half started with some minor adjustments and a spectacular half time speech by both coaches. The Coventry girls came out with perfect team shape and execution, they scored 2 more goals in the first 10 minutes of play. The match got tighter as it was closing in on the 20 minute mark and Coventry scored another goal, team Phoenix made some great passes and we got called for a hard tackle in our box for yet another penalty kick which was almost saved by Carly Furtado in goal. With 5 minutes remaining the Coventry girls scored another goal to make it another 5 to 2 victory for the first round of play.
